Monhegan Island Trails and Brewery

Back in August 2021, we got to visit my most favorite trails in the world (so far) – the trails that circle Monhegan Island, Maine.

After falling in love with the tiny island 10 miles off the coast, I’ve been fortunate enough the come back and enjoy the idyllic views.

Monhegan Brewery Company has opened and grown since the first visit. It’s a great addition for that post-trail ale.

Monhegan Island has trails that circle and criss cross this tiny island, but don’t let the small size fool you. You could easily spend multiple days hiking the various paths. There are rocky coastline trails, deep woods trails, cliff perches and so much more to be enjoyed.

Here’s what I think is the perfect day on Monhegan Island:

• Wake up to a delicious and filling breakfast made by Melanie at the Cracked Mug.
• Spend the morning exploring the trails around the island.
• While you’re out and about, stop by Monhegan Brewing Company for a refreshing beer. Get a growler of ginger beer to go – it makes a terrific Dark and Stormy cocktail pre-dinner.
• Grab a snack and a shower. Because sweat happens. And you won’t need a full lunch after that huge breakfast.
• Visit any open artist studios and the Monhegan Museum of Art and History.
• Make and take your Dark and Stormy to the chairs outside the Island Inn to watch the sunset. Then go inside for a special dinner.

Tips for visiting Monhegan Island:

• You can buy wine a couple of places on the island, but if there’s a special wine or spirit you’d prefer bring it yourself.
• If you will be staying overnight, make your ferry reservation at the same time you book your accomodations.
• There are limited cars and gold carts on the island, so be ready to walk.
• Check if your hotel or bed and breakfast delivers your luggage from the dock. If not, you’ll be carrying/dragging yours along a gravel road.
• If you would like dinner at the Island Inn during your stay, visit the lobby the day you arrive on the island to make a reservation.
• Cell service can be spotty. Wifi can be slow. This a place to relax, so lean into it.
• If you only hike one day, from the village I suggest heading south to Lobster Cove and then following trail 1 along the cliffs. Follow the trail to Whitehead and then use trail 7 to cut back across the island to the village.
